ZSpheres are definitely not the same ballpark as Animation rigs, which tend to have so much technical stuff going on under the hood ( Forward/Inverse Kinematics, Effectors, Gimbal locks, custom scripts, and a whole lot more) that they can't even be shared between other programs. Let me know if you have any other questions. There are many other steps in between like retopology, baking maps, texturing. There are many autorig systems already available on the market.īasically you would use ZBrush to sculpt your model (could use a ZSphere Armeture to get the proportion correct) Then export your low poly model and use an auto rig to rig it for games or film. However quick riggs are never as perfect as manually creating the rig. Now a script would be possible to take the average position of each point in the ZSphere and map that to an animation rig.

Since ZSpheres are full meshes they do not have a single point in 3d space. ZSphere armature or mannequin works in a similar way.Īn animation rig is quite a bit it uses joint chains (each joint has a single position in 3d space) In traditional sculpting you use armature wire to buld a basic posable base for sculpting on. Its just a digital form of traditional clay sculpting. Win-win.)Īs far as I know there is not a way to convert zSphere armature into an animation rig.

Fair trade, plus it would make me feel less dumb. (If anyone who answers is, by any chance, taking their first steps into web design, I'd be happy to answer their total web-noob questions. Again, sorry about the total noob questions. I'm just totally flabbergasted and disappointed to learn that a really cool feature that I thought must be a huge selling point for ZBrush doesn't seem to be what I thought it was, and I'm still hoping I'm just missing something.

Why not? They must be like 99% of the way there, how hard could it be?Īlso, what's the point of ZSpheres then? I mean, totally serious question here, what's the advantage of using ZSpheres to build a (useless?) bone structure instead of just sculpting the shape you want? I'm a total noob, and even I can drag out a few limbs in probably about the same time it would take to build a ZSphere armature. If that's actually correct and ZSphere armatures aren't real animation rigs and can't be converted to one. It should be good to go? At the very least, someone must make a plugin that will convert the ZSpheres to a real rig, right?

The docs say it does "auto-weighting," and I'll be honest I don't exactly know what "weighting" is, but I know it's an important part of an animation rig. Please tell me I'm finding out of date info or something. not much turns up, but a couple several year old forum posts I found say.

Then I tried to look up how to export a model with its ZSphere rig and. I'd always heard rigging was some kind of nightmare, and this approach of building models from the rig up looked so easy and just made so much sense. So, when I first saw the intro videos showing building armatures with ZSpheres, I was super-excited. First, a small disclaimer: I am an absolute and total noob.
